The Black Sail Hut youth hostel in the Lake District is to undergo extensive refurbishment.
Located high in the Ennerdale Valley on the edge of the forest, the former shepherd's bothy can only be reached on foot, but for 80 years it has offered a base for those who want to go walking
on the area's many fells.
The £260,000 facelift will see the building weatherproofed and its running costs reduced, with new measures to save and generate energy.
Double glazing and photovoltaic panels to generate electricity will be among the innovations, although the Youth Hostels Association will be seeking to use the cash - donated by its members - to maintain its essential character.
Black Sail lies close to the River Liza and can be reached via a long walk up Ennerdale via forest paths, or via mountain passes coming over from Sty Head, Wasdale or Buttermere.
Adjacent fells include Great Gable, Green Gable, Pillar, Kirk Fell, Haystacks and High Stile.
