Those wanting to hit the ground walking in 2011 may find a Peak District trek in January a good way to do so.

National park rangers are leading a seven-mile walk on Sunday January 9th around Great Longstone, Ashford and Monsal Head in the White Peak area.

Meeting at 11:00 GMT at Great Longstone, the walk will last until 15:30, with a stipulation that good walking boots and waterproof jackets are brought, as well as a packed lunch.

Such an event may help burn off some Christmas calories, as well as offering the chance to enjoy the landscape in winter and begin fulfilling a new year resolution to do more walking.

Those who do not wish to wait so long to go for a good walk in the Peak District may decide to take part in one of the outings being planned in its Festival of Winter Walks over the holiday period.

These include a ten-mile walk in the Bakewell area on December 27th.
