Those wondering how to burn off some extra calories this Christmas have been advised to try some of the walks being arranged by the Ramblers over the holiday period.

Its Festival of Winter Walks has been noted by the Daily Mirror, which lists what it considers six of the best, including walks in Essex, Bolton, the Fife Coastal Path, Worcestershire, the Cornish Coast and Merthyr Tydfil.

Those thinking they might be putting away their walking boots and winter jackets over the Christmas and New Year period may think again, with such variety on offer.

A total of over 300 treks are available and these vary from the rural to the urban and suburban.

For instance, those who wish to brave the cold of a snowy mountain can head for Sheffield Pike in the Lake District, while those jumping on a bus in Sheffield can enjoy a circular route around Rotherham.
