are becoming increasingly popular, according to one expert, with market growth set to continue over the next few years.
Katrina Morrison, tourism product development manager at Scottish Enterprise, said going for a ride is an option not just for biking enthusiasts.
"The idea of a healthy adventure activity, where you can just pick up your bike and go, has grabbed the imagination of the mass market," she explained.
Ms Morrison added that mountain biking offers fun for all demographics, including families, beginners and even older couples hoping to try something different.
Her comments came as Tourism Intelligence Scotland published a guide encouraging local businesses in the industry to take advantage of an estimated 30 per cent boost in the popularity of biking by 2016.
Earlier this month, Fort William in the Scottish highlands hosted the UCI Mountain Bike
World Cup, which saw British rider Tracey Moseley secure first place in the women's downhill event.
