A rising star in the world of golf has said that his perfect way of getting a little refreshing break from the sport is to put on his cycling clothing and swap his clubs for mountain bikes.

Chris Wood, who is currently 37th in the Ryder Cup rankings, told the BBC he is planning to get in the saddle after failing to qualify for the US Open, which starts later this week.

Describing his plan for a "nice little break", he said the recreational activity was the idea of his manager Chubby Chandler.

He revealed: "It's something I used to do. Chubby has said that I needed to find something different to golf when I'm at home."

Last weekend saw more serious mountain bikers competing in the World Cup at the Nevis Range course near Fort William in Scotland.

The men's downhill event was won by Briton Gee Atherton, while his sister Rachel came second in the women's event as hopes for a family double were dashed by French winner Sabrina Jonnier.
