Hostel rescue indicates need for winter gear

The need to have the right clothing for winter in mountain areas at the moment was emphasised by an unusual call out for Mountain rescue - to a youth hostel.

Visitors staying at Ennerdale Youth Hostel had to be helped by the Cockermouth team to leave the location after being snowed in.

The hostel is located in Gillerthwaite at the end of two miles of forest tracks below the High Stile ridge, with Ennerdale Water nearby.

Such harsh conditions may emphasise the need for those walking in the hills to have fleeces and winter jackets to cope with the severe weather.

The hostel is one of two in Ennerdale and the severity of the snow may be gauged by the fact the Gillerthwaite site is in the lower part of the valley.

Nearer the head of Ennerdale is the famous Black Sail Hut, a former shepherd's bothy that is closed in the winter months and stands miles from any other building.
