The highest youth hostel in the country is to offer solar heating to keep its visitors warm.

Skiddaw House in the Lake District is planning to reopen soon with both photovoltaic heating and wool insulation to provide a warm and eco-friendly welcome in the hills to hikers, Grough reports.

The initiative is being funded by the Lake District Sustainable Development Fund after a successful appeal for a grant by the Skiddaw House Foundation, which runs the independent youth hostel, formerly owned by the Youth Hostels Association.

Skiddaw House is 1,550 ft above sea level can only be reached by those on mountain bikes or wearing walking boots, as it is on a track miles from the road beneath the bulk of Skiddaw itself.

Another remote Lake District youth hostel without public road access is the Black Sail Hut, a former shepherd's bothy located near the top of Ennerdale, close to peaks such as Great Gable, Kirkfell, Pillar and High Stile.
