Those preparing for some winter walks may find their warm jackets are not the only items of winter clothing being worn on the hills, as certain animals grow camouflaged winter coats.

While humans are putting on thermal socks and thermal underwear, some animals are changing colours to match the season and a guided walk led by Peak District National Park rangers will offer the chance to spot some white hares.

Staged on December 20th 2011, it starts at 10:30 GMT at the Clarence Hotel in Greenfield near Oldham, from where the hike will climb up to the top of Chew Moor, Greater Manchester's highest point above sea level.

Walking boots and waterproofs are among the items the authority has advised walkers to bring on the eight-mile trek, which is set to end at 16:00 BST.

It is one of two guided walks being organised by national park rangers next month.

The other, on December 11th, is a shorter and easier walk on low-lying land exploring the scenery around the villages of Great Hucklow, Grindlow and Foolow.
