Hadrian's Wall will be illuminated by a series of beacons in a display of light aimed at marking the run-up to Britain's hosting of the 2012 Olympic Games.
Taking place on Saturday March 13th, the event will see 500 beacons being lit and the line of light stretching the full length of the 84-mile route from Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend.
Hadrian's Wall Heritage is seeking volunteers to operate the beacons, which could be attractive for those well prepared for the weather in men's outdoor clothing
or women's outdoor clothing
Chief executive of the body Linda Tuttiett remarked: "It really will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and something we think people will remember for a very long time."
It may also be a good time for those wishing to invest in some hiking equipment
and a walking pole
to trek along the wall.
The Hadrian's Wall Trail - which tracks the line of the wall both where it is still partly intact and also where no trace now exists - was opened in 2003.
