Next month's Fort William Mountain Festival features a winter skills course, showing those with hiking boots and winter jackets what else they need to take and know on the hills in the cold and snowy weather.

The event costs £50 and lasts for a whole day, during the course of which experts will provide instructions on how to use ice axes and crampons, as well as offering tips on what routes to use.

In addition to this, there is also an avalanche training day, which will offer information on how to spot the risk of such occurrences and how to deal with one.

The festival lasts from February 11th to 15th and also includes skiing, talks by famous mountain figures and films.

Fort William lies at the foot of Ben Nevis, but walkers can also enjoy three other mountains in the area over 4,000 ft high, while the area offers many more Munros in the Mamores and Grey Corries ranges.
