Equestrian clothing need not be expensive, it has been noted.

Tackling the notion that taking up horse riding requires lots of very expensive clothing, chair of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Therapeutic Riding Lynne Munro said jodhpurs are one piece of essential equipment.

"That is what you need to wear to get the benefit of the movement from the horse, the warmth from the horse and also be comfortable so there are no seams that rub," she explained.

Jeans will not do because they have seams and do not stretch in the same way as jodhpurs, meaning they will not be as comfortable, Ms Munro advised.

One essential item to have is a riding hat, she noted, while items such as gloves are an option that people may or may not use.

Horse riding is being encouraged in the UK as a healthy form of exercise by the British Equestrian Federation.

In August it launched Hoof, a campaign aimed at encouraging riding as part of its plans to develop an Olympic legacy.
