Riders of mountain bikes and road bikes alike may be pleased with news that a new guide is being created to the routes they can enjoy in protected areas of countryside in the south-west of England.

Funding from the Rural Development Programme for England has helped with the creation of the Adventure Cycle Map, an interactive guide revealing all the best places to ride in national parks and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Dave Dixon of Southwest Protected Landscapes said: "This online mapping allows us to provide lots of information such as photos and video, enabling people to choose trails that will suit their cycling ability."

Other organisations providing information on cycling routes in national parks include the Pedal Peak District project, which aims to encourage more riding in the national park.

Its work has included developments on the Monsal Trail involving the opening up of old railway tunnels for the first time since the former line closed in 1968.
