Those planning to get fitter after the dietary excesses of the Christmas period can do so on a regular bicycle ride setting out from Edinburgh, it has been noted.

Riders may don their cycle gear and join in the CTC Wednesday cycle leaving the city on that day each week at 10:00 GMT, the Scotsman newspaper reports.

It covers a distance of between 50 and 60 miles, which may require a good level of fitness to start with, but for those who like to remain in good shape it might prove a good way of restoring this after the recent festivities.

And for those not feeling quite so trim, putting on some cycling clothing and riding a shorter distance could be a good alternative.

People all over Britain may make use of the national Cycle Network, which covers 6,500 miles and celebrated 15 years of existence last year.

These routes make it possible to cycle all the way from Land's End to John O' Groats.
