Climbing to be an Olympic sport?

The British Mountaineering Council (BMC) has declared its support for climbing being made an Olympic sport.

In its members' magazine Summit, the BMC revealed that all local areas of the organisation voted in favour of the idea and the national council has confirmed it is in favour.

One immediate effect of the move is to ensure the BMC is still a member of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) and International Mountaineering and Climbing Federation, international bodies that support getting the sport into the Games.

The IFSC will now have the responsibility of lobbying the International Olympic Committee for inclusion, which would be in the 2020 Games at the earliest.

Such a development could encourage more people to invest in some climbing equipment, not least youngsters who may set their sights on winning gold for Britain one day.

The body is already running its own youth competitions, with the BMC Youth Climbing Series beginning on January 30th 2010, Summit stated.
