BBC sports commentator Clare Balding is to swap her normal role of covering horse racing and don her cycling clothing
as part of the corporation's outdoor season.
She will host a series called Britain by Bike, in which she seeks to rediscover the world of guidebook writer Harold Briercliffe, who penned a series of guides on cycling round the country in the 1950s.
Such a show may encourage many people to do likewise and spend part of their summer on two wheels exploring the UK, especially with strikes and the ash cloud disrupting air travel overseas.
Other programmes in the BBC season will include Ride Of My Life - The Story Of The Bicycle, in which cycling fan Rob Penn takes bike maintenance
a step further and builds his dream machine on two wheels.
The history of Britain's national parks, camping and bird watching are other themes that will be covered in the series.
