Police have branded off-road drivers "selfish" for causing damage to a South Lakeland beauty spot.

Lovers of the outdoors have found it difficult to go walking in the area on the Kendal side of the Helm at Oxenholme, which has been churned up by motorists performing stunts on the damp ground, reports the Westmorland Gazette.

Offenders are thought to be using the land at night and have been warned that they are putting their life in danger by doing so.

Police stressed that anyone caught off-roading in the area stands to receive a hefty fine and have their vehicle taken from them.

Sergeant John Stephens of Cumbria Police said he - along with many other members of the local community - is a regular walker on the Helm.

He explained: "Some areas of the Helm have become impassable, even on foot.

"Looking at some of the tracks, it is obvious there is a real danger of drivers losing control."ADNFCR-2803-ID-801516108-ADNFCR
