A tough, comfortable and unhindering pack built for carrying cumbersome loads through inhospitable terrain.
Developed with leading British mountain guides, outdoor activists and lead athlete and big wall climber Andy Kirkpatrick, the Montane Fast Alpine 40 exudes functionality.
It's been designed to help you comfortably carry heavy climbing equipment to the base of a route and can compress down tightly when relatively empty. It sits perfectly with a technical climbing harness and it's robust enough to handle abrasive rock surfaces.
And most importantly, it is comfortable and unhindering on long routes when you need to rely on dynamic climbing manoeuvres.
A mix of tough and lightweight fabrics where they matter most: RAPTOR RS fabric in the main body features a superb DWR and tear resistance, with RAPTOR UTL panels for additional abrasion protection against rock surfaces. The GRANITE STRETCH skirt gives a clean, fabric-hugging lid closure and the super-light HALO lining fabric has a 1m hydrostatic head.
Montane's ‘VertErgo Climb’ lightweight back system provides flexible strength, support and comfort for carrying heavy loads, while the minimalist ‘Comfort Climb Back Pad’ uses channels to enhance ventilation and wick moisture away from your body. You can manipulate it for a tailored fit, and it's helmet compatible and allows for unrestricted movement. A horizontal top section provides structure for the top tension straps to torque off so you can keep your load stable. And if you need to drastically save weight, you can remove the entire ‘VertErgo Climb’ back system from the pack.
CONTACT Mesh on the shoulder straps, a ‘Comfort Back Pad’ and inner hip belt facings all prevent abrasion on your waterproof clothing even with heavy use. The shoulder straps allow for unrestricted movement when you're reaching and stretching, and there are chest and hip gear loops on either side for your hardware essentials.
The chest harness uses an off-centre buckle which reduces bulk across the sternum and is easy to use with gloves or mitts. Body curve hip fins and a waist belt keep it comfortable and stable, and the removable padded hip belt further reduces the weight and prevents interference with your climbing harness.
LOADING AND CLOSURE
An extendable top lid with compression straps can increased the height to accommodate a bulky rope. There's a wide-mouth central opening with an extendable internal top sleeve for extra storm protection, with double compression on the outside and inside and ‘Cord Lord’ quick release mechanism.
Single-hand side compression straps for the whole lower pack body offer effective compression for additional stability, and the space-saving top lid front pull allows for good vertical pack compression too. Internal top compression over the mouth opening gives you secure rope storage.
- Minimalist technical ice axe attachment points let you attach tools in an ‘Alpine safe’ position for safety, whether you're moving quickly or at a tilted angle
- A lightweight, removable ‘Alpine Mat’ - a versatile foldable bivvy mat for additional back system padding
- Front central reinforced horizontal grab handle, easy to use with gloves or mitts
- Stiffened front lid panel with lightweight glove and mitt friendly metal buckle
