Meindl Bhutan MFS, 02 December 2016

Great buying experience from Go outdoors. Being new to hiking and looking for my first pair of hiking boots I did an internet search & after reading many reviews I decided to try on some of the Meindl range of boots. I went to a local Go outdoors in Kidderminster but they only had the Vakuum in my usual size 10. I tried them on in the shop, had a walk around but wasn't 100% on the fit so took the sales assistant up on the offer of buying them & trying them out at home & if not worn outside could return them within 30 days. Being a big kid I drove home in them but when I got home after half hours driving realised they were to tight around my toes. The next day I did a search on the Gooutdoors website to see if any local branches had the next size up, Wolverhampton branch had both Vakuum & Bhutan in stock in 10.5 size. So I headed over & tried both boots on, to me they were pretty similar but in the end I decided on the Bhutan as it appeared easier to clean plus the price saving. Gooutdoors exchanged them no quibble & I also used there price match scheme which is a price match plus 10% £57.14 off there £179.99 price. I drove home in them & walked round the shops, so far so good but yet to try them in the field. Thanks to Gooutdoors for there service. I look forward to giving a review on the boots themselves when I've clocked up some miles.

The one benefit of these boots is the fit and comfort otherwise I think they are poor value. My first pair leaked after walking the dog over sand dunes and through wet grass. They were sent off to Meindl who replaced them. This happened immediately to the replacement pair. Again Meindl tested the boots and replaced them. I have owned the third pair for a year. During this time I have followed the care instructions ( drying in room temperatures, cleaning and waxing regularly. Despite this the boots are cracking and peeking. In addition the protective rand is coming away from the leather upper and cracking. I will not be buying another pair of Meindl boots despit their excellent customer service.

My old walking boots finally fell apart a few weeks ago and I could no longer put off buying a new pair. Had read various reviews about the Meindl Bhutan and wasn't disappointed when I tried on a pair today. Asked to have my shoe size checked and discovered I was a size 9 which came as a surprise! Only one pair left in the shop! Tried them on and they were a decent fit then tried them on again with my own walking socks - perfect and very comfortable. Got them home and given them a good coating of Nikwax for leather treatment. Will give them another coat tomorrow ready for a decent walk on wednesday.
Great price into the bargain as I got an extra 15% off on Bank Holiday monday and all Nikwax products were half price. Can give an update after 1st walk .

Thought I'd add something having had the Bhutan's for over a year. Still really pleased and definitely the best boots I've owned.
I wear them 3 or 4 times a week and probably average 25k a week. I've never had a blister or any pain and they are very comfortable and warm. They are holding up well - no splits and the rand is still intact. They have never leaked and the sole is wearing well. I do keep them clean and waxed.
Two points to note, there are lighter boots available but I doubt they are as strong or as stable. Secondly, my feet get a bit warm in very hot weather.

I've worn these boots now on a few reasonable hikes... the best thing about them is that they are so comfortable and definitely no blisters.
However, I do have a couple of issues with them which shouldn't be a problem for the majority of people.
The first and biggest issue for me is that the boot has a roll on them that for the vast majority of walkers will make walking a lot more comfortable and easier. On rough ground this roll is not an issue but on hard surfaces it absolutely kills my feet because I've discovered I suffer from over supination. I've had to try out some insoles to try and compensate but this takes up room from the boot and as such I am wishing I had bought a size bigger... or a better still a different type of boot altogether without any built in roll. So I would think twice about these boots if you tend to walk on the outside of your feet.
The second issue is that they over heat on hot days. Luckily, there hasn't been many of those but something to keep in mind.
