Mammut Ultimate Hoody 5*, 15 August 2016
By Chicane (Oxton)
This garment is one of my favourite pieces of clothing ever. I've had it 1 year now and here follows my review based on my experience.
I was delighted with the Mammut Ultimate Hoody the moment I put it on. I'm one of those people with long arms that cant ever find clothes that keep my arms snug. This solved that problem. The thumb loops are well designed and strong. The media pocket is great, I just leave my headphones inside the pocket. The material is soft warm and extremely wind resistant. I have been out in gale force winds and you just don't get a wind chill at all.
Another superb feature if this product is that due to the thin materials you can layer with this garment very well indeed.
It does shed light rain quite well and I absolutely love the high quality materials used. The concealed adjusters for the hood are just genius. There is no sign whatsoever of any wear/tear after a year and personally I think it still looks brand new.
You can find this jacket reduced nowadays because there is an updated version. The new version is pretty much just cosmetic changes, so don't bother getting that one, buy this one.

I just wanted to add to my last review. Having had this jacket for a little longer now. Was out bagging Hewitts yesterday in 60mph winds. Exposed on the top of a large hill over 2,000 feet in gale force winds having to use a walking pole in order not to be blown over, the jacket proved its wind proof capabilities. Was very impressed at how it held up in such conditions.

First the best things... love the material, love the ventilation features, love the style, love the thumb holds that almost make the sleeves act as fingerless gloves.
However, I do have two problems with the jacket... the first is not so major... the hood is not the best fitting... the cords help but the peak is not so sturdy as appears in the Go-Outdoors video. It does because the jacket is not really about being waterproof... it is a windproof jacket that can cope with the odd shower if you happen to get caught... it is not a downpour all day in the rain jacket and is not sold as such.
The major issue I have with the jacket is the pockets. You have two lovely deep pockets and the chest pocket is smaller - not big enough for a map but suitable size for a phone - albeit not a waterproof pocket. The problem is that the two 'hand' pockets are all but useless except for perhaps gloves and a hat... the lining to the pockets is the inner mesh and as such they are more another form of ventilation than a practical pocket... not having a substantial lining but instead using the mesh makes the pockets impractical for keys which is not going to be an issue if you are out walking with a pack but if you want to use the jacket for going to the park or the shops... having at least one sound pocket is useful. Perhaps the lining is robust enough for keys but it does not look it. I do a daily local walk of about 2-5 miles where I don't take a pack with me and one large walk every weekend. I really wanted to use this jacket for the short daily walks but not having a pocket for my house key is really putting me off the jacket.
Mammut Ultimate Hoodie, 22 January 2016

This has turned out to be a lengthy review, but I just cannot say enough good things about this jacket!
I generally favour Mountain Equipment and Rab clothing for my outdoor gear, but on this occasion they didn't have exactly what I wanted in their line-up, and so this was my first purchase of a Mammut product.
The Ultimate Hoodie is absolutely superb for those cold-crisp winter days - but where there may be the possibility of snow or light rain flurries - which this garment sheds with ease. (I'd stick with my hardshell GTX jacket for proper downpour conditions - but those conditions are not what the Mammut Ultimate Hoodie has been designed for!).
The jacket is very well made, with quality material and zips etc., and has numerous little touches which just make it that little bit better than average. It looks very stylish for those with a flair for fashion, and fits like a glove over a thin baselayer and mid-layer top. (I'm size 39 chest, and bought a size M hoodie).
Being a softshell, the fabric easily flexes with every little movement, and is silent as would be expected - unlike the rusting that a hardshell can sometimes make.
I have always tended to run hot on long Lake District fellwalking ascents, even in the depths of winter, and the full length pit zips provided by this jacket are very very useful indeed! - In fact, those particular zips were the main factor which originally tipped my choice in Mammut's favour, over two or three other contenders.
The hood isn't wired, but it is the perfect size, when correctly adjusted by the (interior stowed) toggles, to move with the head, keeping you well protected, but at the same time, not getting in the way. The sleeve length is slightly on the long side, (potentially making it worth checking the fit before purchase) - but that is a design feature to facilitate the excellent wrist covering potential that the long sleeves, together with the (hidden) thumb holes provide.
Yes, it's quite expensive, but in my opinion, worth every penny. I can't think of one negative attribute.
I nearly always buy my outdoor gear from Go-Outdoors because they sell the best products, and you can always get a bargain if you use the price-match-plus offer sensibly. However, I have to confess that on this particular occasion, I had to purchase the garment elsewhere, because I wanted a specific colour, which unfortunately wasn't available from Go-Outdoors. (I'm often out in the hills solo, and like to have my outer garments in bright, easily seen colours, just as an added safety factor).
All in all, the Mammut Ultimate Hoodie is a faultless garment - if you are considering one then don't hesitate, get one before they stop selling them!

I am absolutely over the moon with my Mammut Ultimate Hoody. Over the years I have had many items of Mammut clothing and this hoody does not disappoint it is well made and extremely durable it has ample storage pockets and vents that can be opened from the hip all the way to the inner arm, what you would expect from outdoor clothing. I would recommend this product to anyone who is serious about the outdoors .
