Hill Walkers' Survey Launched
Posted February 2010

A survey of hill walkers has been launched to establish how willing people are to accept being charged to go walking on the hills, should the funds be used to help conserve the upland environment.
The study is taking place as part of a Sustainable Mountain Development MSc dissertation at Perth College, with an online version being posted on the John Muir Trust website.
People in walking gear will also be surveyed face-to-face in the Cairngorms between now and August at various access points to establish how much people are willing to do to combat the issue of erosion caused by increasing walker numbers.
Questions in the survey include which areas of the country people like to climb hills in, what their motivations are for doing so, what aspects of this they like most or least and how people feel footpath repairs should be funded.
Some locations have donation boxes to help for the upkeep of paths and habitat, such as those owned by the National Trust.
Examples of this include the box at the foot of Jacob's Ladder, below Kinder Scout in the Peak District.
