Vibram® RollinGait System.
Hi-Tec and Vibram® have worked hand in hand to yield a truly inspiring technology which will change the way people think about their footwear.
Vibram® has performed extensive research on the technicalities of mountain running and walking and has come to these conclusions:
- The descent is the crucial moment during which the footwear can be a determining factor in improving an athlete’s performance
- At the point when the descent gradient increases there is a greater tendency for the foot to make contact with the ground with the heel area
How it Works
The Vibram® RollinGait System builds on this data. RGS is a new innovative technology from Vibram® that aims to reduce muscle fatigue when running and walking. It has been especially developed to optimise energy output during downhill running and walking. When the foot first hits the ground it is usually with the heel, which is – at that point - the centre of pressure. Once the heel has made contact with the ground, the pressure moves towards the metatarsus and then to the toes. The curved shape of the RGS’s sole supports the natural movement of the foot whenever it experiences impact with the ground.

Great boots, 10 October 2016
By Navara (Renfrewshire)
I have a pair of the boots for over a year, the boots were like slippers they required no breaking in very comfortably from the moment I put them on, I have worn them through rivers and the sea and have remained water proof.
The only reason why I have only gave the boots four stars was the sole seem to have worn out faster than previous boots that I have owned, I liked the comfort so much I have just purchased another pair.

Thought id give these boots a go and so far they have almost been brilliant. I have done the Buichaille Etive Mor munros about 6 hours of walking and climbing and also the Aonach Eagach Ridge full ridge and down off the back another 6 hour day both had mixed weather heavy rain and sun later in the walk. Boots have been great. Dry and Very comfortable the only thing I would say is the lack of heel is a bit strange to get used to and sometimes off balances you other than that great boot so far.
Don't trust Vibram RollinGait, 31 July 2016
By Tony (Weymouth)
I wanted a replacement for my 12 year-old Scarpas, which, for their swan song, had just taken me up the Pennine Way. I bought a pair of Hi Tec Altitude 8 months ago from Go Outdoors, added a pair of Sorbothane insoles and found the combination very comfortable.
After several hundred miles, I'm wondering if the recurrent discomfort in my calves is a sign of ageing, but then I make the connection - maybe it's the boots. Did a 15 mile walk with a 9Kg backpack in the Hi Tec - calf and soleus fatigue. As an experiment I did another 15-miler with the same pack weight but, this time, wearing my old Scarpas - no calf issues. The next 15-miler it's back to the Hi Tec and, guess what? Your got it - it's the old familiar calf strain again.
The RollinGait soles are meant to "reduce muscle fatigue," but they do the opposite. They don't work on treks with a backpack, for whatever anatomical reason; the lack of a heel evidently deprives your leg crucial support.
The upshot? three weeks' time I'll be back on the Pennine Way in my trusty old Scarpas.
It's a shame because, in every other way, the Hi Tec have been very good.

After using boots from £50 up to £160, I decided to ignore the brand name and the associated price hike and try these out. Liberal application of G-Wax has made them into boots I will trust in any conditions, and makes walking on the moors a dry experience. Teamed with waterproof gaiters they make a great 3 season boot, comfortable and waterproof. The lack of a heel bridge can make descending on wet grass a bit slippy, but the long-walk comfort more than makes up for that.
