Prone to leaks but don't write it off., 05 June 2014
By Craig (Coventry)
Like some reviews the first time I used this product I woke up to find it deflated. Had to wait to get home and with a bucket of water found a small leak on the join by the valve. Repaired it only to have it fail the next time. This continued for months of very intermittent use.
Eventually I gave up and took it back to my local shop. Even though I'd let it slip past the warranty (12 months!) the store manager swapped it without question since it had failed within the warranty. My new matt works brilliantly.
I'm 14 stone and this matt copes very well with my weight. Despite other reviews it is much more comfortable than the cheaper roll-up matts, and warmer, while being about the same bulk and only slightly heavier.
They are a bit narrow, but bigger matts are available. You have just have to balance comfort with the bulk and inconvenience of carrying/packing a bigger matt. For me this matt is a nice compromise. Although, would have to agree... it's a bit slidey.
In short, 4 stars for the matt, but 5 stars for the excellent customer service.
Very Poor build quality, 10 June 2013
I bought this product with high hopes from reading reviews. First night use was wonderful, comfortable. The second night sleep, i woke up with a sore hip. The mat had been leaking air through the night from around the valve where it had been glued. I returned the mat and got an exchange for the same mat on the hope that it was a one off. I have just been away camping for a week. Same old story, first night was wonderful. Second night, i woke up with a sore hip once again. On investigation, air was leaking from the valve its self. It could not be fixed leaving me to sleep on hard ground for a week. I am 5'7" and weigh 11st 7. I wouldn't say i weigh a lot to cause both problems. I would not recommend this mat
Waste of money, 19 August 2012

I bought 3 for a recent camping trip and after day 3 when out and bought airbeds. In our mid 30's we are quite happy to rough it but these mats are no more comfortable than the foam ones you can buy for 5 pounds. My wife and I are not large or tall adults and even we found these mats too small. Our daughter kept sliding off hers as someone else stated on their review. In my opinion a poor buy and and an honest review.
Good mat as alternative to airbed, 13 August 2012
By CampingWife (Ware)
I purchased this after my husband refused to use our airbed as I kept waking him up! He already had a Thermarest, but I was not keen on spending that amount of money on something I may not get on with.
The Explorer is a deep inflatable type mat. I found it comfortable, except I really need a pillow with it. The mat inflates well on its own, and squashes back down for storage. I didn't feel it was too narrow, unlike the previous reviewer and did not slip off of it. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a comfortable alternative to an airbed.
Hi Gear Explorer Sleeping Mat (5cms),, 13 August 2011

This was a purchase to tempt my wife away from her inflatable air bed for our camping trips. Despite the good quality I didn't succeed for two reasons; she kept sliding off the shiny surface (there was no friction with a sleeping bag) and it wasn't wide enough for her 5ft 6in frame. That said, our children have taken it on Scout and Cub camps and found it fine ...... when wrapped in a blanket to prevent the slide. Definetly for the younger campers.
