Good crampons, 02 June 2013
By Chris (Birmingham)
I've used a pair of those on few winter walks in Scotland, Lake District and on a glacier in the Pyrenees and Alps. Works very nice and I can't say I had any issues with the binding. I've paired them with semi-soft B1 boots (Mammut MT Trail XT) and they result was mint (also I recommend a soft joining plate for that, you can pick one up from grivel website for £10).
I had no problem digging through thick crust to carve steps on steeper slopes, and the fact you use semi-soft boots makes it a heaven during the approach. All those people I've passed in the Lakes/Walles with rigid boots and new-matics, looks good but you don't need it for a hike, get the right tool for the job that's the key.
Highly recommend for any winter hike or scramle (like peaks/wales trials). If you plan on climbing a face go for full rigid -matic like Rambo Evo and rigid boots, but then again if you climb a face you know that already.
Great points / terrible bindings, 09 July 2012

The G12 and G14 crampons from Grivel are superb units. The G14 with its vertical modular front points being a the
more technical version for steep ice. The G12 lacks the modular vertical points but is a very rugged crampon, ideal
for summer alpine climbing or glacier work. The G12 will work well on a B2 or B3 boot to give an secure and
reliable crampon that you'd expect from the Grivel. However: DO NOT BUY THE NEW CLASSIC VERSION - GET THE G12 NEW
MATIC VERSION INSTEAD.
The New classic binding system is not fit for purpose. I experienced extensive problems with this crampon during
the summer, it constantly worked off after only a few minutes on a variety of snow types. The crampon was on a C2
Boot and the failure mode was the metal strip between the front and back portions of the crampon working loose from
the length adjustment mechanism on the heel unit. The settings / length adjustment mechanism was not at fault and
correctly adjusted for the boot (B2 size 6/7). My eventual conclusion was that the hefty rear basket was simply not
applying enough down force on the crampon during use which somehow managed to result in the spring loaded length
adjuster coming undone allowing the front/back connector bar of the crampon slide free during use (the adjuster
design relies upon the boot heel to lock the bar). No amount of adjustments or strap tightening seemed to make any
difference to the problem. The basket back appears not pull the crampon onto the boot but instead is reliant on an
over boot strap to do so. No amount of tightening of the over boot straps was sufficient to prevent the problem
This is potentially very dangerous and seems to be a problem that stems from the heel basket design coupled to the
length adjustment mechanism. After struggling for several hours on steep snow my partner and I concluded it was
safer to forgo using the G12 New Classic altogether (despite many stops to reattach / failed attempts to readjust
etc). A pair of G12 New Matic were purchased hastily and have performed flawlessly since.
To repeat, the G12 is an excellent crampon but the New Classic version is to be avoided.
