20 years after the original assisted braking belay device, Petzl has introduced the GRIGRI 2.
The Petzl GRIGRI 2 belay device builds on the success of the first GRIGRI, which revolutionised sport climbing over the last 20 years. Besides being smaller and lighter (185 grams), the Grigri 2 works with thinner ropes, and allows for smoother lowering.
Its assisted braking facilitates belay maneuvers, and works equally well for lead climbing and top roping. It may be used on all single dynamic 8.9mm to 11mm ropes on the market (ideal at 9.4mm to 10.3mm).
The GRIGRI2 can be used with almost any single dynamic rope. Whether working a route with a thicker rope, or trying to send your hard test piece using a skinny cord, the GRIGRI 2 will perform.
The GriGri 2's progressive descent control system is specially designed to offer smooth, even lowering action - there's a larger 'sweet spot' when lowering a climber or rappelling.
The compact and ultra-light design allows excellent control during the descent. One hand holds the rope and the other uses the handle to unlock the cam, the patented handle design allowing a very gradual release of the rope. In combination with the strong braking action of the cam, it gives a great feeling of control when lowering a partner or rappelling.
Belay technique is identical to classic belay systems: both hands on the rope. A fall is stopped by tightening the hand on the free end of the rope.
Assisted braking capability: during fall arrest, the belayer holds the free end of the rope, the cam pivots and pinches the rope, increasing the braking action until the rope stops sliding.
A stainless steel friction plate and cam ensure a long life for the product.

Absolutely great assisted breaking device I got it for Easter thing I don't like is abseiling it only does single ropes which is annoying but as I said great belay device you can definitely know Petzl understand sport climbing
Not for leading in the gym..., 19 November 2015

This is a great belay device and deserves the good reputation it has.
It doesn't feed well when lead belaying with a well used rope (such as in a climbing gym) but apart from that it is almost faultless.
As for one of the previous review which gives poor feedback... The handle is perfectly large enough and sheds down weight whilst still giving full control when lowering off (i guess some are just slow to get to grips with belaying). The rest seems to be about others belay techniques and not the device. I find a review an odd place to complain about anything other than what you're reviewing.
Conclusion: unless you spend every hour leading on your gyms ropes, buy one.. you wont regret it
Best Belay!, 06 October 2015

The Petzl GriGri 2 is by far the best belay I've ever used! It has an active breaking system so you can honestly put 100% confidence into it stopping falls effectively. The lowering leaver is really easy to use and allows you to lower at different speeds, you can also use it for abseiling and descending.
When it comes to climbing do you really want to risk an injury or even death because you've brought cheap equipment? No. Honestly buy the GriGri 2, get familiar with it and you'll never go wrong! Great price of kit!

Pros: lighter and smaller than gri-gri 1
Cons: Handle is smaller and therfore makes it hared to hold especially if you are lowering someone who is heavier (which is usually why i would suggest a gri-gri). does not allow smooth and controlled lowering on a wet rope, sticks and then fully releases with the smallest changes in pressure. See far too many people trying to lead belay using a gri-gri (either model) who are NOT doing so safely, you still have to hold the dead rope.
Yes, it is a halpful back up with groups, but it also doesnt enforce the seriousness of their job in holding the rope... which leads us on to...
I see far too many people relying on the SEMI auto locking function of this device. It is not 100%, it doesnt mean that you can be a lazy belay partner.
Please dont buy this becasue you think it will make you a safer belayer...it seems to do the opposite!
