Great bit of kit, 21 September 2016

Really new to these, but can now see how this benefits me.
I can create my own routes and also see how far in time and distance is left. The heart rate monitor is a tad pointless but was included in the pack, all the fixing make me nervous but seem to have held out so far. Time will tell, but so far really pleased

My wife brought me this in January and I've covered 2000km with it now. I think it has physically saved my life at least twice, and emotionally at least once.
The previous reviewer states that he has had lots of trouble uploading routes, but I have not found the same issues. I use 'ridewithgps.com' to plan, then download a gpx file to my laptop, and upload it to the Garmin. Easy.
So how has it saved my life. Well on a few descents I've been able to see sharp corners coming up, or junctions, and reduce my speed accordingly. Some times by not enough, but I would hate to think how fast I would have been going without it. Emotionally it saved my life one cold and wet January, when I just wanted to get home a cold and broken man, and it guided me the easiest route back in my time of need. Without it I would have been lost in the peaks.
I couldn't recommend it more. Navigation, loads of stats, and the ability to upload to Strava. What more could you want? Highly recommend.
Poor and difficult to use, 27 April 2014

Unless your IT skills are of a fairly sophisticated level I really wouldn't invest in this. Free apps on an iPhone such as Endomondo do much the same thing and are so much easier to understand. The instructions are very poor. It has taken days and days to learn how to plan a route and download to the device and even then 9 times out of 10 it doesn't work. The transfer to device icon keeps disappearing and Im sure that isn't my fault! Whether the fault is with the device or the Garmin website and software I don't know and care less. The result is the same.
The only benefit I can see is that the battery on my iPhone runs out after about 6hrs in the saddle whereas the Garmin Touring will last more than twice that. The map on the device is tiny and very hard to read. As for being waterproof I doubt it very much:The cover for the charging port will just about close but only just. I'd hate to put it to the test.
You can spend hours plotting a route, press save and all you get is your log on screen and everything is lost. I've nearly put this in the bin so many times. I have a MacBook,iPad and iPhone so Im not a complete moron or techno phobe. Why can't the people who design Garmin products take a leaf out of Steve Job's book and make the end user experience a pleasant and intuitive experience instead of frustrating and ultimately fruitless.I regret buying this product.
