Dry flies are a good bet just now, as the trout are up and about and looking towards the surface. The Hopper is more or less a generic pattern, a catch-all for most of the insects that hatch off or fall on the water, and the usual colours – black, ginger and claret – work really well. This one, with its yellowy-pink hue, is a stand-out pattern for late evening when the light is soft as the sun starts to set. It has accounted for many good trout, fished on its own with a long tapered leader.
