3 litre hydration bladder - essential hiking accessory, 14 June 2011

As a long distance hiker walking up to 12 hours at a stretch I felt the 3 litre bladder was essential to avoid dehydration.
The bladder is accessed through its carry cover via a quarter turn of the blue plastic sealing mechanism and is removed for easy cleaning by releasing the circular seal connecting the bladder to the outer carry cover.
After intial cleaning I was interested to check whether it held the 3 litres as described. The bladder is clearing marked with 1, 2 & 3 litre levels. However I found that there was a slight loss of volume due to the position of the drinking tube which when fitted is at the front of the carry cover but exits the carry cover from a slit in the rear. Thus the tube when fitted may cause the bladder to crease and reduce volume. When filling the bladder for the first time I only managed 2 to 2.5 litres. With careful manipulation any crease can be removed.
To reduce the temperature of the water and improve the taste I usually add several crushed ice cubes to the chilled water (stored in bottles in fridge overnight) and the juice from half a squeezed lemon.
The lemon juice also acts to help reduce the growth of any bacteria in the bladder which should be cleaned after every use .
It essential to purchase a seperate bladder cleaning kit to prolong the expected life of the product .
Overall, I am very happy with the product and would not walk any distance with it.

I have owned a couple of hydration systems in the past and always tried to go 'cheap' thinking they were all the 'same'. What can go wrong with a bladder that holds water with a tube to drink from while on the move? Easy! Well, I couldn't be more wrong. Like with any other outdoor kit its best to buy quality. My last hydration system had a 'plastic' taste no matter how much I washed and re-fridgerated it.
The Camelbak out of the box was perfect. Even giving it the first rinse as advised I had to have a sip to see if the taste was tainted and it wasn't.. perfect!
On checking it over after purchase I rmeoved the bladder (mine is the 2ltr) and it looked a decent size and I wondered how comfortable it would be. I was suprised by how comfortable it was while hiking and climbing. Also the outer does help keep the bladder cool and even when its been on my back for 8+ hours it still manages to stay cool, drinkable... this means I will drink and wont dehydrate.
The bite valve it brilliant too, it has a tap that you can shut off but I leave mine open so that its really easy to just bite the valve ans drink on the move. Even with that tap open the bitevalve is fine and wont leak.
I would highly recommend this as a product, if I lost mine tomorrow I'd buy one again. The only negative I can think of is that it didnt come with a yoke system so that I could use it alone without putting it in my daysack. For runners they could benefit from a yoke system so they can strap it to theirs backs and away they go. Pretty sure you can purchase these seperately but for the price, its a quality product and I am really searching hard to fault it.
