Camelbak Better Bottle comes in two sizes .75 & .50 Liters It is possible to drink using the bite valve while holding the bottle vertical or one can remove the straw and tip the bottle and drink. The inlet valve which allows this to happen is sealed when the bite valve is moved from the drinking position back over the air inlet valve
I have recently been testing the .75 liter size.
I have been using Camelbak hydration bladders for many years as I have trekked solo through wilderness areas worldwide and as my winter trips include 4/6 day treks on snowshoes usually in Arctic Scandinavia I hoped I had found the perfect drink container for those -20º winter nights as sitting up and unscrewing a water bottle is not pleasant. I hoped that I could keep the bottle in my sleeping and sip whilst remaining in the luxury of my down bag.
Regrettably this was not the case, I first tested the .75 liter bottle when on my bike, and it would only fit in the bottle holder if inserted upside down it leaked slowly. I returned the bottle and subjected it to the same test it leaked. I then laid it gently on its side no movement involved it leaked.
I contacted Camelbak in the US an the customer relations person didn’t appear to be surprised, he asked me if I could see any grit etc lodged in the intake vent, I could not so they are sending me a replacement.
Conclusion: - The bottles I bought could belong to a faulty batch I will know when I test the replacement bottle.
I have since found other users in the US experiencing the same problem, so it is fair to assume that Camelbaks reputation for quality products is somewhat dented by this product.
I am off to the Arctic next week and it looks as if I will still be having to partly exit my bag in the cold
The .5 liter bottle weighs 5ozs or 142 Grams is 22 centimeters high and 8.2 centimeters wide.
