Disabled angling inquest as Paralympics hits top gear

THE Paralympics has been in full swing in London – but angling is asking why England was not represented in the 2012 World Disabled Angling Championships, and wondering what the future holds.

British Disabled Anglers Association president Terry Moseley said: ‘Angling for disabled people seems to be on a downward spiral.

‘Firstly, there’s the changes to the disabled National Championships which is now basically an Open match rather than qualifying event. And there’s the blow that a disabled team has not represented England on the world stage (in Portugal recently), denying them from joining in on the euphoria set by other sports.

‘It’s easy to blame lack of funding, but the disabled and under-14’s are the only groups not attending.

‘It makes one wonder if the Angling Trust should be listening and doing more for disabled anglers, rather than talking for them in these days of equality.’

Big Girl loses weight

ONE of the biggest carp in the country has come out – to smash Shaun Gilbert’s personal best by a monster 34 lb.

Shaun was fishing the North Lake on Kent’s day ticket Elphicks Fishery when he captured The Big Girl at a surprisingly low 52 lb 2 oz.

Despite being 10 lb lower than her best weight, the Big Girl is expected to pack on weight by next spring and many still feel she could potential push the 67 lb 8 oz British record mark.

Kevin Nash devastated by giant carp deaths

CARP guru Kevin Nash has issued a warning to fellow fishery bosses after his famous Church Lake lost carp worth thousands of pounds – but in reality were priceless and irreplaceable.

Dying plankton blooms caused an oxygen crash at the private Essex venue resulting in the death of two true English 50-pounders and four other specimens. One 50 was the sought-after Decade Fish.

The water has produced carp to 61 lb 6 oz (in 2010) and has been tipped as one of THE waters to watch for a new British record.

Tackle and bait baron Kevin told Angler’s Mail: ‘I was on holiday in the Canaries and two of my staff were alerted to a possible issue. They only found one dead pike, and took the opinion that there were no real concerns.

‘Whilst I can understand that, there has always been a brief that you must tell Kevin, everything!

‘If I had of been told, I would have instructed that the pumps were switched on 24/7 until I could get back to review the situation.’
