Twirlies Tour (It’s Never ‘Twirly’ Or Too Late To Donate!)

In May 2011 two long-standing members of mountain rescue, Judy Whiteside and Gail Todd walked from Coast to Coast in aid of Mountain Rescue England and Wales (MREW)

Judy and Gail in their finest Paramo!

Because Mountain Rescue are a self funded organization, they operate with no government funding what so ever, which means they have to fundraise all the money needed to operate themselves to operate the teams.Their aim was to raise £5000 for a benevolent fund; but they are still in need of funds to hit their target! Literally every penny will help someone who has been hurt volunteering to help someone in trouble- so we need GO Outdoors lovers to dig deep!

The fund will help the many rescuers who are injured, or families of those who are killed out with funds to cope before insurance pays out. The Coast to Coast is the whopping 192 miles from St Bees in the Lake District to Robin Hood’s Bay on the Yorkshire coast.

It took the Twirlies thirteen days to complete the challenge, which took them via Ennerdale Bridge, Rosthwaite, Grasmere, Patterdale, Shap, Kirkby Stephen, Muker, Reeth, Richmond, Ingleby Cross, Blakey Ridge and Grosmont to Robin Hood’s Bay as well as the rather tall peak of Kidsty Pike

The trip included all manners of adventure, including being ambushed by the general public wanting to donate , encountering moody cows (then learning how to escape moody cows), as well as run ins with parrots and the lesser-spotted British Mountaineer Chris Bonnington! The trip involved dehydration, sun stroke, couple of bruised ribs, a broken thumbnail, and one soggy trouser leg...So every penny you spare will help heal the memories for poor Judy and Gail. (We’re only joking, we know they loved every minute.)

The blog is full of hilarious stories, so we recommend you check it out here. If you can afford to give a bit of spare cash, quickly via the easy to use, safe, secure and gift aid abled Just Giving site, you can do it here.

About Elaine

I'm Elaine and I'm a web content writer at GO Outdoors. That means I write a variety of content for the website, including our Expert Advice Guides. This involves writing guides to help people buy outdoor gear as a beginner. As well as this I work on the reviews- moderating and approving them, so I think I know a little bit about what our customers like and don't like! My aim is to help you understand the outdoors so you can get out there and enjoy it, whatever you've got planned.
