From fighting your way through a mud-fest of an obstacle course to completing labours of Hercules, it’s fair to say that there is plenty of scope for getting involved in endurance events across the UK. We’ve taken a look at the forecast of events for 2015 and we’re pleased to announce that there’s going to be some absolute crackers this year. So much so that it was a tough job narrowing them down – here are our top 30 endurance events for 2015.

January

The Spine Race

  • Date: 10-17 January 2015
  • Location: Edale, Derbyshire
  • Type of Event: Ultramarathon
  • Description: This 268 mile marathon covers the entire Pennine Way, offering challenging yet beautiful terrain along the way, such as: the Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Cheviots, Northumberland National Park, and ending on the Scottish Borders. It’s been dubbed ‘Britain’s most brutal race’ – can you handle the challenge?

Mud Runner – Ice Breaker

  • Date: 15 February 2015
  • Location: Eastnor, Herefordshire
  • Type of Event: Duathlon – 10km cross country, 20km off road mountain bike, 3km run
  • Description: Described by the course organisers as a “10km brutal run, 20km vicious MTB, 3km run – very tough”, it’s fair to say that this is not something for the faint hearted. You’ll likely end up a walking mud ball by the end of it as the course takes you through mud, mud and more mud – but it’ll all be worth it for the buzz of completing it.
  • Skill Level: Experienced – for those who don’t fancy the full course, a shorter version is available which consists of just the initial 10km run.

Tough Guy

  • Date: 1 February 2015
  • Location: Tough Guy® HQ, Wolverhampton, WV6 7HB
  • Type of Event: Obstacle course
  • Description: For those taking part in the 15km course, you’re in for a treat. With over 200 obstacles to get through, including height, water and electricity based tasks, this event really sorts the men from the boys.
  • Skill Level: Experienced – for those new to the event, the 10/12km course (with 180 obstacles) is advised.

Gladi8or


  • Date: 7-8 February 2014
  • Location: Thetford Forest (30 miles north east of Cambridge)
  • Type of Event: Obstacle course
  • Description: Eight miles may not sound like much, but when each mile is packed with a fresh set of obstacles to overcome, it can feel like the toughest time of your life. Test your inner strength and stamina levels throughout the tough terrain of Thetford Forest.

March

Vertical Rush


  • Date: 3 March 2015
  • Location: Tower 42, London
  • Type of Event: Tower run
  • Description: With a whopping 42 floors and 932 steps, you’ll really put your fitness levels to the test as you compete against other runners to get to the top of the tower first. This challenge can be completed as a solo runner or as a team of five, and is a charity event organised in support of Shelter.

Skill Level: Entry level                    

 

The Major Series – North


  • Date: 15 March 2015
  • Location: Bramham Park, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS23 6LT
  • Type of Event: Run / Obstacle course
  • Description: Voted the UK’s ‘Best Trail Race’, the award-winning Major Series is a fun and friendly mud obstacle course. Delivered by British Military Fitness, the 5km and 10km courses  are filled with obstacles, hills, mud and water. The Major Series is all about camaraderie, teamwork and having fun, making it ideal for groups of friends or colleagues. Discounts are available when entering as a team of 10 or more, visit their site for details.
  • Skill Level: Entry level – there’s no time limit and more than 40 former or serving members of the armed forces are available throughout the course to offer help. Nervous participants may prefer to try the 5km run and complete the 10km next time.

Reaper Events Day & Night Run

  • Date: 21 March 2015
  • Location: Heart of England Conference and Events Centre, Meriden Rd, Fillongley, Coventry, West Midlands CV78DX
  • Type of Event: Mud Run/ Obstacle course
  • Description: Be prepared to get muddy on the March Madness leg of the Reaper Day and Night Run. This 10km challenge covers tough obstacles requiring you to navigate through icy cold water and over slippery terrain – are you up for the challenge?

Xtreme Endurance

  • Date: 19 April 2015
  • Location: Chelmsford
  • Type of Event: Run
  • Description: This 7km race comes with a difference – you’ll be given two hours to run as many laps of the full circuit as possible. That’s not all though – you’ll find a series of challenging natural obstacles to overcome along the way so make sure you’re in good fitness. You’ll be given a medal and/ or a T-shirt and water upon completing the race.

London Marathon

  • Date: 26 April 2015
  • Location: London
  • Type of Event: Marathon run
  • Description: The Virgin Money London Marathon gets bigger and better every year. Join one of the 30,000 runners on this 26.2 mile race through the heart of London. Whether you complete the course for charity or for your own personal fitness, it’s important to make sure you train adequately. Follow the training advice for full support and tips. Isle of Wight Challenge

  • Date: 2-3 May 2015
  • Location: West Cowes, Isle of Wight
  • Type of Event: Walk, Jog, Run
  • Description: Challenge yourself to complete the 106km of coastal terrain across the Isle of Wight. Whether you walk, jog or run, this challenge will test your stamina and strength. There are three options: 106km full course, 56km half-course, 33km quarter course. You’ll see some truly stunning scenery along the way, and there’s always a great turnout in the way of support so you won’t have to do it alone.

Thames Bridge Bike Ride – 50 Miles

  • Date: 10 May 2015
  • Location: Southwark Park, London, SE16 2EH
  • Type of Event: Cycling
  • Description: The Thames Bridge Bike Ride sees almost 3,000 cyclists complete the challenge to raise money for stroke survivors. There are three routes in total with the 50 miler being the longest and most challenging. Take to your bike and cross 16 of the famous Thames bridges as you take in some of London’s top sites.

London 2 Brighton Challenge

  • Date: 23-24 May 2015
  • Location: Richmond on Thames start – Brighton Race Course finish
  • Type of Event: Walk, Jog, Run
  • Description: This 100km route takes you along off road terrain for 60 per cent of the way, testing your stamina and level of determination. Labelled as an Ultra Challenge, around 500 participants run the full distance, while the majority of the 3,000 who take part will walk and jog in parts. With a great support network along the length of the route, you couldn’t ask for a more rewarding challenge.

Dare 2B Yorkshire Festival of Cycling

  • Date: Early May but TBC
  • Location: Harewood House, West Yorkshire
  • Type of Event: Cycling/ Run
  • Description: Harewood House is hosting a series of challenges next year, all with one aim in mind: to put your fitness level to the test. Take part in as many or as few challenges as you like and experience the stunning scenery of West Yorkshire. From off road bicycle rides to tougher duathlons, you can really put your skills to the test.

June

Grand Union Challenge

  • Date: 27-28 June 2015
  • Location: London to Chilterns
  • Type of Event: Walk/ Jog/ Run
  • Description: Realise your fitness goals for 2015 by training for The Grand Union Challenge. This endurance event is made up of three courses: 100km, 50km or 25km and takes you from the centre of London out towards the Chilterns. You can make this event as tough or as easy as you like – the majority of participants choose to walk as that can be challenging enough, but a few outstanding athletes run the full 100km distance – and what a rewarding feeling it is!

Ironman 70.3 UK Exmoor

  • Date: 28 June 2015
  • Location: Exmoor National Park, Wimbleball
  • Type of Event: Swim/ Cycle/ Run
  • Description: Ironman – one of the toughest types of challenges physically that you’ll ever complete. You’ll have to be a strong swimmer, fast cyclist and endurance runner to complete this varied terrain course. As the UK weather is so unpredictable, be prepared to battle against the elements as well as your fellow participants.

July

The 12 Labours of Hercules


  • Date: 11-12 July 2015
  • Location: South Shropshire Hills
  • Type of Event: Ultramarathon
  • Description: This 78 mile ultra-marathon can be complete as a solo, in pairs or in teams so it’s as challenging as you make it. Each person must run a minimum of one mile, and of course, to make it that bit more of a challenge, there are 12 mini tasks (labours) to complete along the way.

The Great Glen Ultra

  • Date: 4 July 2015
  • Location: Neptune’s Staircase (outside Fort William) to Inverness
  • Type of Event: Ultramarathon
  • Description: It’s known as ‘one of Scotland’s toughest challenges’ but don’t let that put you off. Starting at 1am from Neptune’s Staircase, participants are given 24 hours to run the 72 mile stretch all the way to Inverness. Water will be provided at checkpoints along the way, with further refreshments available at the finish line. The question is, are you brave enough to take on the challenge?

Ride Newcastle 2 London 24

  • Date: 22-23 August 2014
  • Location: Newcastle start to Central London finish
  • Type of Event: Cycling
  • Description: Have you ever cycled 300 miles in 24 hours? It’s a tough challenge but if you think you’re up to it, why not try the Newcastle to London 24 bike ride? The route consists of seven sets of around 40/45 miles, with rest stops at the end of each to refuel your body and repair any damage to your bike. With a total climb of 2,450 metres, it’s not a ride for the faint hearted! Join on of the 300+ riders next year on this tough endurance event.

Coast to Coast Adventure Race


  • Date: 28-31 August 2015
  • Location: St Bees Head, Cumbria start to Robin Hoods Bay, North Yorkshire finish
  • Type of Event: Varied – Cycling/ Kayaking/ Swim/ Run
  • Description: Follow in C2C founder Alfred Wainwright’s footsteps on this adventure race. Whether you choose to complete this course as a solo entrant or in a team of three, the Coast to Coast Adventure Race does exactly what it says – you will be required to cycle, kayak, swim, run and navigate the length of this stunning course to beat your fellow participants to the end. It’s tough but the views along the way make it all worthwhile.

Ironman Wales

 

Great North Run

  • Date: 13 September 2015
  • Location: Newcastle
  • Type of Event: Half-Marathon run
  • Description: Join the many thousands of runners on this 13.1 mile route through Newcastle and Gateshead. It’ll be tough if you’re not sued to running such distances but the support from spectators will keep your energy up and motivation level high.

24 Ultra Run

  • Date: 3-4 October 2015
  • Location: Ashburnham Place, Battle, East Sussex TN33 9NF
  • Type of Event: Ultra Trail Run
  • Description: How do you feel about 24 hours of non-stop running? Well that’s what’s in store for you if you enter the 24 Ultra Run. There’s also a 50 mile night run if you’re looking for a shorter alternative – either way, you’ll need as much determination and strength as you can muster.

Commando Challenge


  • Date: 10-11 October 2015
  • Location: Bicton Arena, Yettington near East Budleigh in Devon, EX9 7BL
  • Type of Event: Obstacle Course/ Run
  • Description: This charity 10K ‘marine’ challenge takes place on an actual Royal Marines obstacle course. This event is the only time that it is open to the general public, and participants are in for a real treat. You’ll need to muster all of your strength and determination to complete this mud fest of a race.

Rogue Runs

  • Date: 31st October 2015

White Rose Ultra

  • Date: 1 November 2015
  • Location: Colne Valley, Yorkshire
  • Type of Event: Ultramarathon
  • Description: Compete against both locals and international runners in one of the super-challenging White Rose Ultra Marathons. Choose from a 30, 60 or 100 mile course (brand new for 2015) and really put your determination to the test. Whether you run, walk or crawl, you’ll have to find your inner strength and grit to finish this one with a grin on your face.
  • Skill Level: Experienced – dependent on how fast you can run. If you cannot complete 30 miles in less than eight hours then you will not be permitted to enter the 60 miler. For the 100 mile course, you’ll need to prove you’ve already completed an ultra of at least 70K on a hilly course.

The Druids Challenge Ridgeway Multistage Ultra 2015


  • Date: 6-8 November 2015
  • Location: Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire
  • Type of Event: 3-day Ultramarathon
  • Description: This challenge is open to everyone from 18-75 and comprises a three day ultra-marathon of 84 miles. There are no cut-off times at checkpoints or the finish so it’s not about who can do it in the fastest time, but who can muster the necessary determination to finish. Overnight accommodation, evening food and breakfast is all included in the cost.

Capital Runners Richmond Park Christmas 10K

Welsh 3000s

  • Date: Any time
  • Location: Snowdon
  • Type of Event: Mountain Walking
  • Description: Also known as “The 14 Peaks”, this 24 mile mountain climb is an immensely tough challenge and a far cry from the “Three Peaks Challenge”. Participants must already have climbed to the top of all of the over 3000ft mountains in Wales (all 15 of them!)  within 24 hours

Three Peaks Challenge

  • Date: Any time
  • Location: Ben Nevis, Scotland/ Scafell Pike, Lake District/ Snowdon
  • Type of Event: Mountain Walking
  • Description: Although there is no set time limit for climbing the three highest mountains in Great Britain, many challengers attempt to complete the climbs in 24 hours, while others stretch the experience out over a long weekend. It’s completely up to you how difficult you make the course for yourself – we love a bit of a challenge so we recommend you try to complete it in a set time.

Scottish Ultra Marathon Series

  • Date: 14 March – November 2015
  • Location: Various locations around Scotland
  • Type of Event: Ultramarathon
  • Description: This season-long running championship is split into two sections: short and long series. Short series include races less than 50 miles (or 12 hours) while long series include races over 50 miles (or 24 hours). At the end of the season, there’s an awards ceremony which recognises the best runners overall as well as the top runners in each age category. Races include Devil O’ The Highlands, Glasgow to Edinburgh, and the 95-mile West Highland Way Race, to name a few.
